Hungarian citizenship through marriage — egyszerűsített honosítás. This is the permanent solution: Hungarian citizenship = EU citizenship, eliminating all Schengen restrictions and granting the right to live and work anywhere in the EU/EEA.
Prerequisites
| Requirement | Andrea's Status |
| Marriage duration |
5+ years married to HU citizen with a child together (Nathan). OR 10 years without a child. Andrea and Adam meet the 5-year + child condition. |
| Residency in Hungary |
Not required — this is the key advantage of simplified naturalization. No need to live in Hungary or have a registered address. |
| Hungarian language |
Conversational ability (A2–B1 level). Assessed informally during the application appointment — not a formal exam. 15–30 minute conversation with the officer. |
| Clean criminal record |
No criminal record under Hungarian law. Self-declared on the application form. The authority may request a foreign criminal record certificate during processing (125/1993 decree, S.3(2): "felhívására"), but this is not a mandatory upfront document. |
| Adam's consent |
Adam must consent to the application. Can be done in person at the appointment or via written statement. |
| Multiple citizenship |
Allowed — both Canada and Hungary permit multiple citizenship. Andrea would hold CA + HU passports. |

- Option B — In Canada: Hungarian consulate in Ottawa or Toronto. Book at konzinfobooking.mfa.gov.hu. Must be in person.
Processing & Timeline
| Official processing | Up to 3 months (extendable by 60 days) |
| In practice | 6–12 months is common |
| Oath ceremony | Must be taken within 1 year of positive decision. Can be at consulate in Canada or a mayor's office in Hungary. Citizenship is legally acquired on oath day. |
| HU passport | Can apply same day as oath ceremony |
| Cost (DIY) | ~$200–400 CAD total (application itself is free; costs are translations and apostilles for birth certificates) |
Language assessment detail: The officer asks about your life, family, why you want citizenship, and topics from your handwritten CV. No grammar test, no constitutional law questions. Andrea's existing Hungarian vocabulary foundation is a strong starting point — focused practice on these interview topics (60–80 hours) is typical preparation. If the officer deems language insufficient, it's not a formal rejection — Andrea would be told to continue studying and schedule a new appointment.
