Getting to Brno & Prague

Three realistic modes of getting from Gyöngyös to the Czech clinics. Door-to-door times assume light traffic and no delays.

Gyöngyös → Brno (Reprogenesis)

• Distance: ~470 km
• Time: ~4h45–5h15 (no stops)
• Route: M3 west to Budapest → M0 north ring → M1 toward Győr → cross into Slovakia at Rajka → D2 north (Bratislava → Malacky → Břeclav) → D2 into Czechia → Brno-Pisárky exit
• Borders: All Schengen internal — usually no stops, but carry ID. Spot checks happen.

Gyöngyös → Prague (IVF Cube)

• Distance: ~720 km
• Time: ~7h–7h30 (no stops — realistically 8+ with a toddler)
• Route: Same as Brno route up to Brno, then D1 northwest → Jihlava → Prague → Evropská corridor straight to Vokovice
• Honest take: 7+ hours with a 2-year-old is punishing. Break the trip or use the hybrid train option.

Vignettes (all electronic since 2021)

All three countries went fully electronic — camera enforcement, no physical sticker. Buy on the official sites only (third-party resellers charge 50–200% more).

Overnight Strategy (Driving)

• Brno: Drive up the day before retrieval, stay 2 nights (night before + night of), drive home the morning after retrieval. Andrea can't drive for 24h post-sedation — Ádám drives.
• Prague: Arrive 2 days before retrieval if monitoring visit is needed, otherwise 1 day before. Same 2-night overnight pattern. Consider breaking the drive back in Brno or Bratislava if tired.

Drive the ~80 km from Gyöngyös to Zsófi's in XVI district, park there, take public transit to Budapest Nyugati, catch the direct EC train to Brno or Prague. Adds logistics but removes 5–7 hours of driving.

Zsófi's to Budapest Nyugati

• By public transit (~50–60 min): Bus 131 or 31 from near Mátyás király u. to Örs vezér tere (~15–20 min) → Metro M2 (red) 6 stops to Deák Ferenc tér → Metro M3 (blue) one stop to Nyugati pu.
• By taxi (~25–40 min): ~5,000–7,000 HUF (~€13–18). Worth it if loaded with luggage or IVF medications needing careful handling.
• By car + park near station: Keleti-Parking charges ~6,000 HUF/day (max), ~18,000 HUF for a 3-day trip. Saving vs. taxi is marginal and Budapest driving/parking stress is real.

Nyugati → Brno hl.n.

• Duration: ~4h06–4h49
• Frequency: Every 2 hours throughout the day
• Services: EC "Metropolitan" (ČD-operated) and EC "Hungaria" (MÁV-operated) — both continue to Prague
• Price: 2nd class advance ~€15–22; 1st class ~€25–37. Walk-up flex ~€70 (2nd) / €106 (1st).

Nyugati → Prague hl.n.

• Duration: ~6h30–7h00
• Frequency: Every 2 hours, same trains that stop in Brno continue on
• Price: 2nd class advance ~€19.90–21; 1st class ~€37. Walk-up flex ~€70 / €106.
• Night train: Also available with sleeper beds — useful if you want to arrive rested.

Booking & Class

• Where to book: jegy.mav.hu (MÁV — cheapest advance fares, in English). Omio and Trainline also work but charge markup. Advance fares open ~60 days out.
• 1st class for Prague is worth it: 2+1 seating vs. 2+2, more luggage room, quieter. €15–20 extra for a 7-hour trip with a toddler pays for itself.
• Restaurant car: Accessible from both classes.

Nathan's Ticket

BUD → Prague (PRG)

• Direct ~1h20 flight. Ryanair 10+/week, Wizz Air also flies the route. Advance fares from ~€19 one-way, ~€74 round trip.
• Real door-to-door: 1h to BUD + 2h check-in/security + 1h20 flight + 30 min arrival + 1h PRG airport → IVF Cube (bus 119 or taxi) ≈ 6 hours total. No time savings over the train.
• Deal-breakers with a toddler: airport stress, liquid restrictions on IVF medications, no flexibility if Nathan melts down, no moving around during the flight.

BUD → Brno (BRQ)

• No scheduled commercial service. Brno airport has only ~18 destinations (mostly London Stansted, Milan Bergamo, Malaga). Would require Prague routing or Vienna detour.

Brno hl.n. to Reprogenesis

• Distance: ~3 km (Pisárky district)
• Tram 1 from "Hlavní nádraží" stop (direct line, direction Bystrc) → "Pisárky" stop — 10–12 min ride, then 2 min (~118 m) walk to the clinic on Hlinky
• Tram 5 also serves Pisárky from some directions
• Taxi: ~150–200 CZK (~€6–8), 8–10 min

Brno Public Transit (DPMB / IDS JMK, 2025 prices)

• 24-hour ticket, zones 100+101 (city): ~90 CZK (~€3.60)
• 24-hour all-zones (regional): 180–200 CZK
• Kids under 6: free. Ages 6–15: half price.

Hotels Near Reprogenesis

Clinic sits next to Výstaviště Brno (Exhibition Centre). The exhibition cluster has several 4-star hotels all within a 5–10 minute walk of the clinic — no tram needed on clinic days.

Prague hl.n. to IVF Cube

• Distance: ~9 km (Vokovice, western Prague)
• Route (~35–45 min total):
  1. Metro C (red) one stop north to Muzeum
  2. Transfer to Metro A (green), ride ~6 stops west to Dejvická (terminus)
  3. Tram 20 or 26 toward Divoká Šárka — ~5 stops (10 min) to Nad Džbánem
  4. 2 min walk to clinic
• Alternative: Bus 119 from Nádraží Veleslávín (one A-line stop before Dejvická) runs the airport/Evropská corridor
• Taxi / Uber / Bolt: ~250–400 CZK, 15–25 min
• Parking at clinic: IVF Cube has a large guarded on-site parking lot if driving

Prague Public Transit (DPP, 2026)

• 24-hour ticket: 150 CZK (140 CZK via app)
• 72-hour ticket: 350 CZK (340 CZK via app)
• Children under 15: FREE on all Prague public transit. Ages 10–15 need ID. Nathan rides free.

Hotels Near IVF Cube

Sightseeing on Non-Clinic Days

If recovery day allows, central Prague is ~25–30 min from Vokovice by Metro A. Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) is on the same tram line — get off at Pražský hrad stop. Don't overdo it on retrieval recovery day.

Night Before Retrieval

Stay near the clinic. Retrievals typically start 7:00–8:00 am and any travel delay can cost the cycle. Both Reprogenesis and IVF Cube recommend local accommodation the night before.

Night Of Retrieval

• Most patients leave the clinic ~1.5–2 hours after the procedure.
• Sedation (typically propofol + fentanyl + midazolam) wears off quickly, but dizziness, nausea, and cramping are common for several hours.
• Andrea cannot drive for 24 hours post-sedation — universal medical rule, also a legal issue.
• Same-day long-distance travel (5h drive to Brno or 7h to Prague → home) is medically possible if Ádám drives and Andrea reclines, but it's an unpleasant day with a cramping Andrea and a bored toddler.

Recommended Pattern

OHSS Risk

If Andrea has a high ovarian response, the clinic may recommend staying within easy reach for 3–5 days post-retrieval to monitor for OHSS symptoms (severe bloating, rapid weight gain, breathing difficulty). Ask the clinic directly when they confirm the cycle plan.

Nathan (HU + CA, ~2 years old)

• HU ID card is sufficient for travel throughout Schengen (HU ↔ SK ↔ CZ). All three are Schengen member states — no fixed border checks, but documents must be carried for spot checks.
• HU passport is a good backup, especially if flying.
• Canadian passport is not needed for internal Schengen travel.

Andrea (CA only, eventually with HU residence permit)

• Before residence permit: Canadian passport. Remember the Schengen clock — days spent in CZ and SK count against Andrea's 90-in-180 limit just like HU days.
• After residence permit: Passport + HU residence card. Unlimited stay across HU; the card also supports travel within Schengen for up to 90 days per 180.

Ádám (HU + CA)

• HU ID card is sufficient. HU passport as backup.

Solo Parent With Nathan

Health Coverage

• EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) covers emergency medical care in CZ and SK for Nathan (HU citizen once TAJ is active) and Ádám.
• Andrea needs private travel insurance until she has HU health coverage. Emergency care only — IVF is out-of-pocket regardless.

Per Retrieval Cycle, by Scenario

Zlin assumes 2 free hotel nights at Hotel Tomasov (clinic-adjacent, confirmed Apr 20 consult with Anna Rakova) — the hotel line drops to €0 for the patient-and-partner room. Second room for Ibolya is not assumed free. If the free-nights offer is revoked, add ~€100/trip to the couple figure.

Shared Assumptions

• 2 nights near clinic — arrive day before retrieval, retrieval day, travel home the morning after.
• Hotel: ~€50/adult-room/night (budget hotel or Airbnb). 3-person scenario assumes one family room at ~€65/night; 4-person scenario assumes two rooms or a family suite at ~€90/night.
• Food: ~€30/adult/day (Brno) or ~€35/adult/day (Prague), ~€15/toddler/day.
• Route per the recommendation section below — drive direct to Brno, hybrid drive-to-Zsófi's + EC train to Prague.
• Kids under 6 ride free on Brno DPMB / Prague DPP local transit and on most Czech intercity trains in 2nd class with an adult.

• Vignette prices — all three countries adjust annually. Always buy from official sites only.
• Hotel rates — fluctuate with Brno exhibition schedule and Prague events. Check dates.
• Reprogenesis / IVF Cube protocols — each clinic's exact overnight recommendation and OHSS monitoring window. Ask at cycle confirmation.
• Prague metro/tram works — line closures happen; check dpp.cz before travel day.
